Exhibition Halls

The seventh hall suggests a collection of birds, which is one of the best in Russia by its variety (1,500 species). The greatest contribution to its creation was made by E.A.Eversmann. Owing to a big number of stuffed birds bought in his time (two thirds of total number species of the Museum), as the collection was regularly enriched, at present the Museum shows the main orders and families of birds living on the Earth. The most valuable is the collection, which implies birds from a raven of 1,8 kg weight to a goldcrest of 15 g weight.

The Buceros bicornis with huge beaks of unusual shape attract everybody's attention. These beaks play important role in biology. When hatching, a male-bird hides the female-bird in a hollow, giving food to her through a narrow hole. Thus, their nestlings are protected from predators. Before nestlings' leaving the nest, male-bird breaks the partition by its beak and nestlings become free.

Owls inhabiting in Tatarstan are represented completely: snowy owl, long-eared owl, a few species of tawny owls and little owls, Otus scops and the biggest one eagle-owl. Steppe eagle, golden eagle, Haliacetus albicilla, the biggest bird in Tatarstan, and other daytime birds of prey, nest on the territory of the republic.

In the last and largest hall of the Museum there are approximately 300 exhibits of mammals from proto-animals to higher primates. Duck-bill and echidna were bought by E.A.Eversmann in 1842. These animals had been already included among the Museum exhibits before Karl Linney described his system.

The stuffed desman, one of the ancient animals, found in the basins of the Volga and the Don rivers, is of special value. Desman fir is in demand at the world market. However, hunting for the animal is banned for the reason of its endangering. It is included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation.

The Museum carefully preserves exhibits having been gathered during two centuries and adds new ones to them. They serve science as before and help to teach students as well as bring up young generations to love nature.
