The Invertebrates Section consists of three halls. Having visited them, we come to the Vertebrates Section. The collection of skulls and skeletons of different fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, is kept in the Comparative Anatomy Hall.

The fifth and sixth halls are occupied by rather big collection of fishes. It is a remarkable gathering of Acipenseridae. Here one can see the stuffed hausen (Acipenser huso), which is considered the biggest freshwater fish: its weight according to some sources, can be 1,5 tons. Interspecific hybrids of Acipenseridae (hausen and sturgeon, stellate sturgeon and sterlet and others) are also quite amusing.

Species of carp-like and salmon-like, eel-like and perch-like and others are exhibited in these halls.

The appearance of many gamognathic fishes from the museum collection is astonishing. Here one can see Diodon hystrix, Spheroides, Balistidae, different kinds of ostraciontidae, Molidae, which is one of the fecund fish in the world. It lays up to 300 grain of roes for one spawning.

Visitors usually listen to a story of endemic from Lake Baikal with great interest. After fecundation the fish comes up from the bottom. Because of difference of pressures its belly bursts, its larvules go out and the fish dies.

In the stalls next to one can see fishes from northern and Far-East seas, such as cod, navaga and haddock. The only representative of Gadidae order is eel-pot, which is found in the Volga River. It is unusual because of its spawning period from December to February.

Then go amphibians and reptiles. The number of amphibians in the Museum is not very big. Proteidae, Salamandridae, Ambystomatidae and others are quite interesting.

A stuffed Sphenodon punctatus, the most primitive contemporary reptile is of great scientific value. It is often called a living fossil of Tertiary period. Among lizards there are Ptychozoon homalocephalum, varanus and Phrynocephalus. Next to them one can see different types of snakes from Pythons to Crotalis and Sistrurus.

The order of tortoises is quite various beginning with tropical turtles and up to the most northern marsh tortoise, which natural habitat reaches Tatarstan. Stuffed crocodiles of all three families from Alligator mississippiensis to Thomistoma schlegelii are quite impressive.
