Uchenye Zapiski Kazanskogo Universiteta
Proceedings of the Kazan University
Uchenye Zapiski Kazanskogo Universiteta is one of the oldest Russian scientific journals.
The journal Uchenye Zapiski Kazanskogo Universiteta was founded in 1834 as an initiative of the rector of the Kazan University and an outstanding mathematician N.I. Lobachevsky. In the first issue of the Journal, the scientist explained how this periodical differed from other social, political and artistic journals describing "passions and feelings": Uchenye Zapiski are for those "who are meant to work for science and expect reward in fame and scientific glory". The words of the famous scientist sound quite up-to-date even today. Science continues to maintain its status throughout authoritative periodicals, which present not only the newest achievements in various fields of sciences that develop under the University roof, but also promote the formation and development of the research and educational community, as well as scientific schools and trends.
During the entire decade, Lobachevsky himself worked on Uchenye Zapiski, ran the publishing committee, and reviewed the scientific papers. Philologist O.M. Kovalevsky was the head of the Journal during the next twenty five years. He was the rector of the University in the 50s of the 19th century. In the next ten years, the Journal was divided into two series according to the division of sciences - natural and humanitarian.
Uchenye Zapiski stopped their activity during the revolutionary era and were resumed only in 1925, though published irregularly. In 1972, after the release of the 130th volume the Journal stopped existing again. The first attempts to restore the Journal were made during the period between 1995 and 2005; nineteen volumes were published on irregular basis.
Uchenye Zapiski Kazanskogo Universiteta began publishing regularly starting from 2005. By that time, in place of two, it had three series, namely: "Seriya Gumanitarnye Nauki" (Humanities Series), "Seriya Estestvennye Nauki" (Natural Sciences Series), and "Seriya Fiziko-Matematicheskie Nauki" (Physics and Mathematics Series).
Each series now represents a separate scientific journal maintaining general continuous numbering of the issues of Uchenye Zapiski. By tradition, the issues of Uchenye Zapiski are called "books" and within one volume each book has its own number.
Uchenye Zapiski Kazanskogo Universiteta are published with a periodicity of six books a year within the "Humanities Series", and four books a year in both "Natural Sciences Series" and "Physics and Mathematics Series". Leading scientists and scholars of the Kazan University as well as prominent specialists from other universities publish their articles in the Journal.
During the time of its existence, numerous eminent scientists published their works in Uchenye Zapiski Kazanskogo Universiteta, such as N.I. Lobachevsky, N.N. Zinin, K.K. Klaus, I.N. Berezin, E.A. Eversman, A.M. Butlerov, V.V. Markovnikov, A.M. Zaitsev, N.F. Katanov, V.M. Bekhterev, N.A. Vasiliev, N.A. Livanov, A.E. Arbuzov, B.A. Arbuzov, N.G. Chebotarev, E.K. Zavoisky, S.A. Altshuler, A.Z. Petrov, V.K. Piskorsky, M.M. Khvostov, I.N. Smirnov, N.N. Firsov, and many others. The current generation of scientists has a fine example set before them.
