ŅI SUMMER SCHOOL-SEMINAR VOLGA-11'99
Kazan, Russia (5.07.99 - 16.07.99)

Analytical Review

The ŅI school-seminar "Volga-11'99", conducted under the aeges of the XI Petrov readings", was attended by 147 people who for the most part were students, post-graduates and young scientists from different parts of this country - Sibiria, the Urals, Bashkiria, Republic of Mariy El, the city of Vla-dimir, Kazan, Nizhniy Novgorod, Penza, Moscow, district of Moscow and Yaroslavl -, from CIS countries - Ukrainia - and from all over the world - USA, UK, Mexico, Czechia.

Prominent scientist holding leading positions in the scientific world and belonging to foremost domestic (the Universities of Moscow, Tomsk, Nizhniy Novgorod, BSU, RUFP, Sci.Center "ITEP" of Russian Federation, Physics Institute of RAS, IPP of RAS, ISE of RAS, Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna), IM of Ural Sci Center of RAS, IMM of Kazan Sci Center of RAS, Kazan Physical-Tecnhical Institute of RAS) and foreign (University of Aberdeen, National Institute for Nuclear Research of Mex-ico, Olomouz University and other) educational and research centres delivered courses of lectures and brought to discussion topical problems in such fields of theoretical and mathematical physics as classical and quantum integrable systems, string and superstring theory, conformal field theory, supersymmetry theory, calibration theories, algebraic geometry, topology of stratifications, difference equations, numeri-cal methods in astrophysics, mathematical and physical essentials of quantum cybernetics and others.

The variety of themes represented in the school reports, that ranged from physical to purely mathematical, is typical of the school work which finally reflects the variety of directions in which possi-ble solutions to the important problem in the physics of the XXI century - creation of quantum theory of gravitation- is sought. It is quite possible that numerical methods using quantum computers, the creation of which is believed to be promising for artificial intelligence, will play essential role in this.

World famous domestic and foreign scientific schools in the field of physics and mathematics have made a significant contribution to the development of the above mentioned directions of research and continue to give considerable assistance in the solution of the above problems.

A student seminar organized by A.Yu.Morozov proved to be an innovation in school work, large contribution to which was made by the students of MPTI (Kirill Saraikin) as well as by ones be-longing to the Universities of Moscow, Nizhniy Novgorod, Kazan and Kiev (Oleg Lisovoy and others). A series of lectures on algebraic geometry and integrable equations was masterly read by Alexander Chervov (the University of Moscow). With alacrity Georgy Chubarov (the University of Nizhniy Novgorod) set forth his personal outstanding results obtained for the stratification theory. All the speak-ers were distinguished by their excellent speaking, profound knowledge of the subject and, as a conse-quence, the wide range of interests and enthusiasm. Quite often disputes arising in the conference hall were carried over into living rooms and continued until late at night. If we manage to preserve such peo-ple and the like in Russian Science, then we shall not have to worry about its future.

Evening interviews with the lecturers allowed students to turn to the more human and scholarly experience of the prominent scientists, created the atmosphere of democracy and encouraged young scientists to be at case. Thus, the interview with L.A.Sudarikov, a representative of Ministry of Science of Tatarstan Republic, grew into a talk about future of Russia's science. The school seminars were held under the badge of the 275th anniversary of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS). At the opening meeting the academician of the RAS and chairman of Presidium of the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.I.Konovalov devoted his speech "Kazan and Russian Academy of Sciences" to this. It was a speech composed of a great number of examples of people's faithful service to science.

This date was also marked by participants' visit to the exposition "Russian Academy of Sciences 275 years old" that was especially arranged in the museum of history of the University of Kazan. Following the proposal of the RFBR council all school printed mate-rial and all articles of a school participant's set (a folder with the emblem on, program paperback, bro-chure of papers abstracts and others) were set in a jubilee logotype, also printed on especially made T-shirts. Apart from the brochures "A.Z.Petrov" and "A.P.Shirokov" the set contained the book "Kazan and Russian Academy of Sciences".

In press are the first part of the third volume of "Notes on lectures on theoretical and mathe-matical physics". This book will be of use for research in the field theory, the theory of gravitation, ele-mentary-particle physics, cosmology, mathematical physics, geometry, topology and cybernetics. The "Notes" may be used for educational purposes (for reading general and special courses) and for doing degree works. Besides it there is also "Proceedings of the school-seminar Volga" coming out within the "Recent problems in the field theory" series.

The opening meeting of the XI Petrov readings took place in the museum of history of the Uni-versity of Kazan. After the anniversary speech by academician A.I.Konovalov and the report by assis-tant-professor M.A.Malakhaltsev devoted to the memory of outstanding geometrician Prof. A.P.Shirokov, who died on September 29, 1998, there was a lecture by the director of the Kazan Physical-Technical Institute, the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, K.M.Salikhov "Quantum computations and quantum computers". The opening ceremony concluded with a concert by the winner of international contests, the monk's choir "The Pulpit" on the gallery of the former university church (nowadays it is the place of the museum of history of KSU).

When weather was fine lectures and interviews were held on the "stairs"- an open area on the side of the Volga, surrounded by pine-trees and equipped with seats for listeners, arranged in the form of a semicircle. To this place they brought a huge samovar with boiling water to have tea-drinking. Charmed by the vastness of the Volga and beautiful sunsets the attendees often ended inter-views with amateur concerts with verse declarations and singing.

During the school days there was "Evening of Russian Romance" (performed by deserved artist Of Mariy El G.M. Starostina), a concert of classical music (performed by post-graduate Kamil Enikeev, KSU) and a multi-board chess play on 16 boards with 1998 champion of Tatarstan, winner of Russia's 1998 championship among clubs, school participant post-graduate Konstantin Igudesman, the score being 15 to 1 to his advantage. The only victory was gained by leading teacher of the University of Chalyabinsk, V.S. Matveev. Following the established tradition, the closing ceremony was triumphantly concluded with a concert given by Monk's vocal quartet of Raifa monastery of Holy Mother.

The school attendees could enjoy concerts of classical music especially arranged for them, go sightseeing in Kazan or take delight in the aquatic festival "Nupetune's Day" and the national tatar festi-val "Sabantuy". Besides it they could compete in volleyball and football, go boating or go for an outing to the lake Glukhoe. At the closing meeting they gathered together by a huge campfire set on the bank of the lake Yaltchik in the national park of Republic of Mariy El "Chodra".

The work of the school-seminar drew public attention and was covered in the press (the news-paper "Shakhri Kazan") and on radio (the radio station "Radio of Tatarstan"). A special block in the television program "Steps" (Channel IV) was also given up to it. The organizers prepared colourful in-formational posters and created continuously operating site on the Internet (URL: http://www.kcn.ru/petrov_school).
