General Information about KSU

Founded in 1804, Kazan State University is the second oldest university in Russian Federation. An internationally acknowledged centre of academic excellence, it is usually listed among 5 to 10 top institutions of higher education in the country. The history of KSU is associated with many world-known names like those of the father of non-Euclidian geometry Lobachevsky, the writer Tolstoy, the founder of non-organic chemistry Butlerov, the precursor of modern linguistics Baudouin de Courtenay, the discoverer of Electron Spin Resonance Zavoisky and the first Soviet leader Ulianov-Lenin. Today many graduates of the University are known as prominent politicians, famous professionals, successful businessmen and distinguished scholars.

The University is one of the architectural diamonds right in the centre of the thousand-year old city of Kazan, the capital of the bi-cultural Republic of Tatarstan populated by 1.2 million people, mostly Russians and Tatars. While located within the same time zone as Moscow, it stands on the left bank of the great Volga River bordering Europe and Asia some 800 kilometers east of it. To reach Kazan from the country's capital, it takes a one-hour flight, an overnight train or a four-day leisurely journey down the main waterway of Russia's heartland.

Being the main center of higher education for a vast region, KSU has 17 traditional faculties and 100 academic departments. It numbers 17,000 students, 300 full professors And 1,000 associate and assistant professors, thus having one of the best student-to-professor ratios in the country.

Kazan State University carefully preserves the two-century old traditions of its world-known scientific schools in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and linguistics. Over the last decade it has succeeded in promoting state-of-the art research in the areas of computing, environmental science as well as social and cultural studies, often taking advantage of interdisciplinary approaches.

The University continues to serve as a leading national research centre, providing its students and staff, as well as academic visitors with various laboratories, seven excellent museums, a botanical garden, research practice bases, two astronomic observatories and many other facilities. Its Lobachevsky Library, containing over 5,000,000 volumes is one of the largest and oldest in Russia. The University also has IT centers, publishing houses and a central to the city complex for culture and sports.

The University is a recognized leader in international cooperation. Each year KSU members win dozens of grants from international foundations and get involved in many projects jointly with leading research centers in many countries. KSU students and professors actively participate in bilateral research and educational exchange programs with about 50 partner institutions in more than 20 countries.

Academic visitors from all over the world are highly attracted by both the University's reputation and the cultural richness of Kazan and Tatarstan. The number of visitors has been significantly growing following the University's 200th anniversary and the city's millennium celebrations. Kazan State University continues to develop the infrastructure and academic culture which enable wider international cooperation and provide better research opportunities to visiting students and scholars. Today more international, Russian and Tatarstan foundations provide support to those who wish to study and do research at KSU.
