General Information about KSU

Founded in 1804, Kazan State University is the second oldest university in
Russian Federation. An internationally acknowledged centre of academic
excellence, it is usually listed among 5 to 10 top institutions of higher
education in the country. The history of KSU is associated with many
world-known names like those of the father of non-Euclidian geometry
Lobachevsky, the writer Tolstoy, the founder of non-organic chemistry
Butlerov, the precursor of modern linguistics Baudouin de Courtenay, the
discoverer of Electron Spin Resonance Zavoisky and the first Soviet leader
Ulianov-Lenin. Today many graduates of the University are known as prominent
politicians, famous professionals, successful businessmen and distinguished
scholars.
The University is one of the architectural diamonds right in the centre of
the thousand-year old city of Kazan, the capital of the bi-cultural Republic
of Tatarstan populated by 1.2 million people, mostly Russians and Tatars.
While located within the same time zone as Moscow, it stands on the left
bank of the great Volga River bordering Europe and Asia some 800 kilometers
east of it. To reach Kazan from the country's capital, it takes a one-hour
flight, an overnight train or a four-day leisurely journey down the main
waterway of Russia's heartland.
Being the main center of higher education for a vast region, KSU has 17
traditional faculties and 100 academic departments. It numbers 17,000
students, 300 full professors And 1,000 associate and assistant
professors, thus having one of the best student-to-professor ratios in the
country.
Kazan State University carefully preserves the two-century old traditions of
its world-known scientific schools in mathematics, physics, chemistry,
biology and linguistics. Over the last decade it has succeeded in promoting
state-of-the art research in the areas of computing, environmental science
as well as social and cultural studies, often taking advantage of
interdisciplinary approaches.
The University continues to serve as a leading national research centre,
providing its students and staff, as well as academic visitors with various
laboratories, seven excellent museums, a botanical garden, research practice
bases, two astronomic observatories and many other facilities. Its
Lobachevsky Library, containing over 5,000,000 volumes is one of the largest
and oldest in Russia. The University also has IT centers, publishing houses
and a central to the city complex for culture and sports.
The University is a recognized leader in international cooperation. Each
year KSU members win dozens of grants from international foundations and get
involved in many projects jointly with leading research centers in many
countries. KSU students and professors actively participate in bilateral
research and educational exchange programs with about 50 partner
institutions in more than 20 countries.
Academic visitors from all over the world are highly attracted by both the
University's reputation and the cultural richness of Kazan and Tatarstan.
The number of visitors has been significantly growing following the
University's 200th anniversary and the city's millennium celebrations. Kazan
State University continues to develop the infrastructure and academic
culture which enable wider international cooperation and provide better
research opportunities to visiting students and scholars. Today more
international, Russian and Tatarstan foundations provide support to those
who wish to study and do research at KSU.
