About 800 full- and part-time students study and about 40 professors work at the Faculty. Experienced practitioners participate in education as well. The Faculty of Journalism and Sociology is one of the University's most unique units providing expert training in prestigious present-day activities.

Students are trained in two specialties: 021400 - Journalism, 020300 - Sociology.

The period of intramural studies at the Department of Journalism is five years for full-time studies and six years for part-time. The qualification conferred is "Journalist".

At the Departments of Russian and Tatar Journalism students study a wide range of the humanities and receive deep knowledge in the theory and technology of journalism. Students practice at leading mass media outlets in Kazan. In summer they work with editorial offices of newspapers, magazines, radio and television in Tatarstan and Russia.

The Department provides a major in TV Journalism, Advertising and PR as well as Internet Journalism.

The period of intramural studies at the Department of Sociology is five years. The qualification conferred is "Sociologist. Teacher of Sociology".

Here students study the theoretical fundamentals and rules of sociology functioning, principles of correlating methodology and methods of sociological knowledge.

Expert in Sociology is trained to work as a teacher and administrator in secondary and higher institutions. Graduates of the Department can pursue their careers at analytical sociological centers, enterprises and research institutes.

The Departments at the Faculty of Journalism and Sociology are engaged not only in education but also in long-time research in developing public relations, theory and history of Journalism, including Tatar and Tatarstan Journalism, as well as sociological research. Over the last ten years Faculty professors have published 15 monographs, over 20 joint scientific works, about 40 textbooks and manuals. Research almanac "Tonus" is published regularly. Several scholars participate in the international research project "Tempus".

The Faculty also provides postgraduate studies in two specialties: Sociology and Journalism of three and four years in duration for full- and part-time studies, respectively. Postgraduate studies are carried out in individual curricula. There is a Board for defending candidate theses in Sociology. Postgraduate students of Journalism can defend their theses at the Board for doctoral dissertations under the Faculty of Philology.

The Faculty of Journalism and Sociology also has classes in Internet Journalism, computer class and photo laboratory that are used for complex research and instruction as well as practical classes and tutorials.

The well known Center for the Sociology of Culture has been a part of the faculty since December 1995.
