The Republic of Tatarstan is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation. Kazan is the capital of the Republic. It is situated in 797 km from Moscow and occupies territory of 425 square km. The population is more than 1 million 200 thousand people. Climate is moderate continental. The average temperature in January, the coldest month of the year, is -14 C. The average temperature in July, the hottest month of the year, is +27.
Kazan is one of the ancient cities in Russia with its unique cultural and historic heritage, which has preserved archeological, architectural and cultural monuments of the ancient Bulgar, the Golden Horde, the khan, the Russian and the Soviet periods. The capital of Tatarstan is included into many influential international organizations: "The World Federation of Twin Cities", "The Organization of World Heritage Cities", "The European Association of Historical Cities and Areas". Kazan is the centre of the Euro-Asian branch of the World organization "The United Cities and Local Governments", is included in list of cities of the World heritage.

As announced on 31 May, 2008, Kazan is the host city for the 2013 Summer Universiade.
