FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

Introduction

On 20 December 2007, the 62nd General Assembly of United Nations proclaimed 2009 the International Year of Astronomy. UNESCO was designated as the lead agency and focal point for the Year. The UNESCO Thematic Initiative "Astronomy and World Heritage" contributes to the preparation of the International Year of Astronomy, and will provide an opportunity to raise public awareness, especially with young people, about the safeguarding of scientific heritage, and to enhance the links between science, education and culture. Director-General of UNESCO officially launched the cycle of activities "Astronomy and World Heritage: across time and continents". One of the main activities of this cycle is the international conference on "Astronomy and World Heritage: across time and continents" will be hosted by the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan, 19 – 24 Aug. 2009, Kazan, Russia (http://www.astroheritage.ru). In the framework of the congress "ASTROKAZAN-2009" will be organized the international school-conference for students and schoolboys of the senior classes "Astronomy in the modern world and education", August, 19 - 22, 2009, Kazan University, Russia.

International school-conference "Astronomy in the modern world and education" hosted and organized by Kazan State University, Russian Ministry of Education and Science, Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Russian Academy of Sciences, Academy of Science of Tatarstan, Ministry of Education and Science of Tatarstan.


Welcome

Organizing Committees of the International school-conference "Astronomy in the modern world and education" extend a warm welcome to all participants and their guests. The Conference will be open for interested students and schoolboys. We wish you a very pleasant stay in Kazan.

The some reports from UNESCO conference "Astronomy and World Heritage", International conference: "Near Earth astronomy - 2009", International Scientific Symposium “The Moon, moons and planets: Robotic Explorations and Comparisons” will be included in the public lecture’s program for students, schoolboys and inhabitants of Kazan.


List of scientific sections of conference:

  3. Astronomical education and astronomy with small telescopes.

The official language of the conference will be English, French, Russian, Spanish.


Symposium Location

The conference will be held in the magnificent and historic building of the Kazan University. The beautiful city Kazan, situated 800 km East from Moscow, is one of the most remarkable and ancient towns at the left bank of the greatest river Volga, Russia. The ancient monuments of Kazan together with its beauty and cultural and scientific atmosphere, made it historic centre as a Russian Treasure. Kazan, one of the biggest and most important cultural and industrial centres on the Volga River, referred to as "the port of five seas, with a population nearing 1.2 million made up of 77 different ethnic groups, is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. Tatarstan is the most northern frontier between Muslim and Orthodox Christian worlds, a secular republic with stability based on a high percentage of mixed marriages, official support for two languages and cultural tolerance. As a transportation hub, Kazan serves a region encompassing over 80 million people.


Entry Visa to Russia

To visit Russia you must have a valid passport. The LOC will mail every participant an official invitation letter which will be sufficient to obtain a entry visa to Russia. According to the Russian legislation, it must be the Organizing Committee who applies for a visa for the participants of the Conference. Please fill and send us the Application Visa Form and a copy the first page of your foreign passport in formats RTF and JPEG accordingly at your earliest convenience. The requests will be send by us to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.


Accommodation

The expected prices for most hotels will be from about 10 Euro (student hostel) to 100 Euro per night. Hotel reservations should be made before May 25, 2009 by Organizing Committee of Conference. Almost all accommodation is within walking distance from the Conference site ("Tatarstan") and taxi, microbus, tram, trolleybus (“Korston”,"Safar", "Regina", "Bulgar"). Reservations should be made through the conference organizers.
Journey and residing of participants of conference will be at the expense of financial assets of the directing organisations.


Travel

Kazan is located approximately 800 km east of Moscow, Russian capital. Getting to Russia by air:
On-line: Frankfurt am Main - Kazan, Istanbul – Kazan (international airport, 20 km from Kazan)
Non on-line: to Moscow, then to Kazan by air (45 min) or by express train "Tatarstan" Moscow - Kazan (10 hours), No. 1 which leaves Moscow at about 9.28 p.m. from Kazanskii Railway Station and arrives to Kazan at about 7.10 a.m.). The average temperature of August is 18-210C.

There will be a number of social events: Evening Public lectures, Concerts of the cathedral chorus of the Raif's Cloister, the "La Primavera", the state ensemble of song and dance of the Republic of Tatarstan, the theatre of opera and ballet, the conservatory, fashion show: 'Melita' Co., "Larisa" Agency and much more…..


Tours and Excursions

Tours and excursions to Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Gold Ring of Russia, Walking tour of the Kazan’s downtown, Kremlin, Rows by boat on the river Volga to city of the Bolgar (IX - XII centuries) and to Island Sviyazsk Russian fortress XVI century, Excursion in the Raif's Cloister, in the state museum of local lore, history, and economy, in the state art museum, in historical and special museums of Kazan University, the mosque of Margjany, St. Petropavlov's cathedral, the Lobachevsky scientific library, the Kazan state Circus, Zoo, Kazan Derby, auto track on the "High mountain", fishing, tourist travels by boats, bicycles and walk around Kazan etc. are available.
